Fall striped bass run has delivered fish over 50 pounds - Asbury Park Press

On Monday, the hunt for striped bass resumed after Sunday's bad weather day.

At least a dozen or so boats were fishing between Shark River Inlet and Asbury Park around mid-morning in a steady northeast wind. A few surf anglers were positioned in the same zone.

A large bass was landed on the Big Mohawk party boat, but the boat's skipper Chris Hueth said overall it was a tough day. He said they read a lot of stripers but the fish didn't bite as they should have. He was expecting more of a bounce back from Sunday's brief storm.

After several solid days last week the fishing did take a little dip Friday and Saturday, which some captains attributed to boat traffic.

There was a large fleet parked from Bradley Beach to Long Branch as word of the fall run and big stripers have rallied striper enthusiasts who could see a drastic cut in the quota come next season.

Rich Falcone, captain of the Golden Eagle, said they boated a few fish Friday but it was difficult to get them to bite. They could see them and get on top of them, but then they'd swim off to where there were no boats, he said.

The boat was out again Saturday and had some stripers early and then the bite slowed, despite Falcone saying there were a lot of fish in the area. The largest one boated on the Golden Eagle was about 48 pounds. Everything was landed on jigs.

Bobby Matthews at Fisherman's Den said the stripers are about a half-mile to two miles off the beach. Some boats are trolling bunker spoons of Mojos. Other boats are getting on top of the fish jigging with metal AVAs or rubber shads.

Matthews said they weighed fish up to 51 pounds last week. On Saturday, he said the shop had two 48 pounders hit the scales, plus a number of smaller fish.

On another note, Matthews said the winter flounder have begun to filter into Shark River.

Captain Howard Bogan Jr. of the Big Jamaica reported another good catch of yellowfin tuna from Hudson Canyon. The boat was out Friday night into Saturday and returned with tuna ranging in sizes from 20 to 70 pounds.

Bogan said it was a little breezy out there, forcing them to put the boat on the anchor. The fish were quiet through the night. At 6:30 a.m. the fish started to school under the boat and jigging became an effective measure to land them at first.

Once the fish started to feed, Bogan said they had good action for the remainder of the trip. A few anglers had limits of tuna.
