Up to EUR 200,000 available for research on humane slaughter methods for wild fish - SeafoodSource

The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) is dedicating up to EUR 200,000 (USD 221,043) in funding for the further development of methods for the humane slaughter of commercially-caught wild fish, it announced on 13 November.

An independent charity dedicated towards “improving the welfare of food animals worldwide,” HSA aims to encourage the creation of humane slaughter methods for wild-caught seafood through the financial support of “a systematic study into humane capture and slaughter of fish caught on a commercial scale in the wild for food,” the organization said.

“The aim of this research is to investigate the feasibility of the development and use of methods of humane stunning or stun/killing for wild-caught fish in order to minimize pain or distress in wild-capture commercial fisheries,” HSA explained in a press release. “The research should also consider the sustainability of such methods (economic, environmental, ethical and social considerations including practicality).”

Three major components will comprise the research, according to HSA: “An overview of the worldwide wild-capture fishing industry; a systematic review of any existing relevant research into the stunning of wild-caught fish and, using the systematic review as its basis; and a feasibility analysis of which fishing system, species of fish, geographical fishing area, etc. is most likely to be amenable to the adoption of routine stunning of wild-caught fish.”

HSA is accepting applications for grants that fit the aforementioned criteria via its website until 10 January, 2020. It will award the up to EUR 200,000 (USD 221,043) funding by to the chosen applicant by April 2020.
