TORRINGTON — Santa Claus recently made a stop at FISH of Torrington’s shelter, bringing presents and hearing wishes from the shelter’s children.
Director Deirdre DiCara held her annual Cookies and Cocoa party for the youngest members of the shelter family, including an 8-day-old baby. The party, she said, is her favorite event of the year.
Staff members dressed as Santa’s elves to help the jolly old elf greet the children, and provided a spread of holiday cookies and hot chocolate for everyone. Parents brought their children to the shelter’s dining room for the party.
Since opening its doors in 1972, FISH has evolved into the largest emergency homeless shelter (35 beds) in the state’s northwest corner, providing families, individuals and veterans a safe and secure haven as they await supportive housing, as well as serving the residents (more than 1,700 annually) of area communities as a food pantry, according to its website.
“Our goal at the shelter is to provide a friendly, communal family setting to our neighbors in need. Our diversity is serving infants through seniors,” DiCara said in a statement. “The programs and social services at FISH NWCT are critical to some for their survival and well being.
“What makes FISH extra special is that we have a case manager overseeing the resources, medical and mental health needs, employment opportunities, and housing possibilities to lead to a homeless resident’s independent living future,” she wrote.
