February Fishing Forecast for the 10,000 Islands

If you plan a trip to the 10,000 Islands in Florida during the month of February, then you will certainly find some great fishing opportunities in your future. February brings temperatures very similar to what we experienced during January. However, we may also see fewer cold fronts than before.

The temperature in February can be anywhere between the high 50s and the upper 70s, with the water temperatures averaging around 60-degrees. With these mild weather conditions, you can find a variety of different fish species in the area.

You can find pompano and speckled sea trout in the grassy and sandy areas, for example. If these are your target fish, then use a bucktail type jig; the more glitter, the better when you want these fish.

The speckled sea trout are great targets if you are interested in shallow water fishing. Trout is considered premier game fish during this time, and they also thrive in these shallow water grass flat areas.

During February in the flats, you can also find a good selection of Spanish mackerel, jacks, bluefish, ladyfish, sharks, and more. For these types of fish, it is best to use a 15-pound braided line and at least two feet of 20 to 30pound fluorocarbon leader.

If the backwater areas and the bays are more your speed, then redfish, black drum, snook, and mangrove snapper will be around. You will also find an increase in the size of the bait shrimp you can use during the month of February as well. The shrimp will be much larger when compared to shrimp you can find during the warmer seasons of the year.

Redfish are definitely the more challenging fish species to go after this month. The shallow water is the best and where you will find the most fun and the most fight.

February is also considered one of the busiest months for fishing in the 10,000 Islands because the weather is much more comfortable and milder than other times of the year. If you haven’t yet been able to get out to the 10,000 Islands area to experience February fishing, you should plan your trip as soon as possible.
