Maine lobster gets all the hype, but pound-for-pound, West Coast spiny lobster have more sweet meat than its East Coast counterpoint. That’s why the annual arrival of spiny lobster season is cause for celebration.
The juicy, Puerto Nuevo-style crustaceans are on the menu at seafood houses around San Diego County, including both locations of The Fish Market, in Del Mar and downtown San Diego.
Basted with butter and grilled over mesquite charcoal, the lobsters are served whole or with Pacific white prawns.
They’re available through mid-March, but spiny lobsters are best early in the season, so take a crack at them sooner rather than later.
