Our average high and low temperatures have been well above normal
Longtime readers know that I'm kind of a weather geek. Quite often it makes me look rather foolish when I make predictions based on a lifetime of observations of our sub-tropical climate.
So far this winter, everything I thought I knew may as well be tossed out the window.
We have had cold fronts drop down the peninsula at a rapid rate, often several a week coming through. Thing is, they just don't pack any real punch and only last for a day or two. Our average high and low temperatures have been well above normal and a cold spell merely brings things down to a normal level.
Many of you may have noticed how this has affected the growth and blooming patterns of plants. If you think the plants are confused, most fish don't have a clue what to do.
In my experience, I do not recall very many times when most all of our native inshore species have themselves spread out from the Gulf beaches all the way upstream in our tidal rivers. Bait fish schools usually long gone at this juncture are still fairly thick in Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor and out in the Gulf as well. Most of the pelagic species that migrate by our coast in the fall are still being caught with some regularity offshore.
One has to surmise that this is all part and parcel of climate change. Our water temperatures locally have only briefly dipped into the mid-60s on occasion, only to yo-yo back to the 70s in short order.
This scenario is great for all the snowbirds coming down here to enjoy some top-notch sport fishing, even though the list of verboten keeping fish is long. Charter operators are happy, even though windy conditions have made things tough. There have certainly been many, many years when a mid-winter fishing trip hereabouts would only yield a mess of sheepshead — if you were lucky. Any honest angler would admit to a preference of being lucky than good any day.
Time will tell, we may have a sudden change in this weather pattern before all is said and done. It always helps to have a "correction" in the fishing pattern with at least a few weeks of winter weather by Florida standards.
