Jim Beam agrees to pay fine for bourbon fire that killed fish in Kentucky, Ohio rivers - Courier Journal

Jim Beam Brands Co. was fined $600,000 by Kentucky's environmental agency this month for a July warehouse fire that caused bourbon to spill into the Kentucky River, killing fish there and in the Ohio River.

Jim Beam agreed to the fine in a Dec. 6 order from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, and it will also reimburse the state agency $112,000 for its costs.

The agreement between Jim Beam and the cabinet states that the fire in Frankfort, which was started by a lightning strike on July 3, caused the warehouse to collapse and an unknown amount of bourbon from 40,000 destroyed barrels to pour into Glenn's Creek and eventually the Kentucky River.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources investigated, finding fish had been killed as a result of the spill along 62 miles of Glenn's Creek and the Kentucky River. There were also dead fish in the Ohio River, but Energy and Environment Cabinet spokesman John Mura described the impact from the spill on the larger Ohio in July as "negligible."

The agreement outlines the possibility of further retribution if the spill is found to cause more environmental problems. For example, if any site containing drinking water for people or livestock is found to be contaminated with ethanol from the bourbon spill, Jim Beam would be responsible for providing an alternate source of drinking water for those affected within 48 hours.

Beam Suntory, the Chicago-based spirits company that owns Jim Beam, did not respond to a Courier Journal email seeking comment Friday evening.
