DNR Puts Fishing Restrictions On Ohio River Fish Species - Eagle 99.3 FM WSCH

Amended regulations have been placed on walleye, sauger, and saugeye.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has placed new fishing regulations on the Sander species in the Ohio River.

Sauger, walleye, and saugeye are the three fish that fall under the Sander species being regulated.

This new rule took effect yesterday, January 19.

Regulations now permit a bag limit of six Sander species per day, possession limit of 12 Sander species in aggregate, and minimum length limit of 14 inches.

The past regulations permitted the take of 10 Sander species in aggregate per day, a possession limit of 20 Sander species, and had no minimum length limit.

The DNR placed this emergency rule to align Indiana regulations for the Ohio River with new Kentucky regulations.

Since sauger is the most popular fish of the Sander species on the Ohio River, high harvest rates are not allowing the population to reach its full potential.

The Ohio River Fisheries Management Team (ORFMT) examined long-term survey data and recommended that these regulations be put into place to increase the size and age structure. Overall, the quality of the Ohio River sauger fish population would remian sustainable in the future.
