New date set for Portland Commissioner Nick Fish public memorial - OregonLive

A public memorial for late Portland Commissioner Nick Fish will occur at Portland State University about a week later than originally announced, school officials said Friday.

The celebration of life is scheduled to be held Sunday Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. at the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom on the downtown Portland campus. It was previously announced as occurring on Feb. 8 at Hoffmann Hall.

Seating at the venue will be limited, but the event will also be livestreamed on www.nickfishforportland.com, the university said. Former Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts is scheduled to be among the speakers at the memorial.

Fish, 61, died Jan. 2 of abdominal cancer. He was diagnosed with the illness in 2017.

Fish, who was well-regarded by many in town, had served on the Portland City Council since 2008. His seat will remain vacant until someone is elected to fill the rest of his term, which expires at the end of 2022. Several people have already filed notice with the city of their intentions to run for the seat.

Patricia Schechter, Fish’s wife and a PSU professor and interim director of the school’s conflict resolution program, said in a statement that she’s grateful to the university for hosting the memorial.

“One gathering alone cannot capture all that Portland meant to Nick or that Nick meant to Portland,” Schechter said. “We hope that this first public celebration will begin to release our grief toward healing as well as inspire service to the community in Nick’s memory, and we look forward to other gatherings.”

A memorial fund has been established in Fish’s honor to support students enrolled in PSU’s Hatfield School of Government. The university said people can donate to the Nick Fish Memorial Fund for Leadership through the school’s foundation website or by mail to:
